Pre-service teachers in the P-6 teacher education program recently visited a local elementary school in the Birmingham City School District to explore the wonder of Science alongside a group of 2nd grade students.

Dr. Jennifer Ponder, a professor in the P-6 program, modeled a fantastic, inquiry-based science lesson, while teacher candidates worked one-on-one with second grade students. Through hands-on, real world experiences in the classroom, UAB students were able to sharpen their questioning skills and grow in their understanding of inquiry-based learning. Through this experience, pre-service teachers were able to gain invaluable insight into the execution of a student-centered lesson, preparing them for the field.

It is field experiences like this one, that keep the fire burning strong, igniting passion in the minds of future educators who are preparing to blaze their own trail in teaching.
